Deped Briones: No mandatory fees for Christmas parties

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones advised students, teachers and other members of the school community not to impose mandatory fees or contributions in throwing Christmas parties this holiday season.

“Contributions have to be voluntary,” the Education secretary said on a “24 Oras” report by Tina Panganiban-Perez on Wednesday.

Briones also encouraged those in the education sector to be mindful about sources of funds.

“These are decisions on a school to school basis. For example, in the school where I finished my undergraduate class, we do not solicit from motels…for example. Or cigarette producers,” Briones said.

Meanwhile, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) reminded government officials and employees not to spend excessively on gifts, as well as funding or organizing too-grand celebrations.

“Huwag magso-solicit ng pangregalo. Basta kung anong mayroon sila, o napag-agreehan nila among themselves to contribute, ‘yun. At kung anong pondong nailaan ng opisina. But then again, ‘di dapat magarbo ang celebration,” said the CSC’s Public Assistance and Information Office director, Ma. Lourdes Salonga Agamata.

The CSC added that Christmas celebrations must not get in the way of giving service to the public.

“Make sure na walang disruption of services. Tuloy-tuloy lang ‘yung serbisyo. Dapat may skeletal force,” Agamata said.
